Ex-commander-in-chief of NATO named the target of Ukraine’s attack on Russian airfields

Ex-commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Europe James Stavridis in his article for the agency Bloomberg wrote that Ukraine’s attack on Russian airfields indicates an escalation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
“One of the explosions occurred at the Engels-1 airbase in the Saratov region, the other at Dyagilevo in the Ryazan region — both hundreds of miles from the Russian border with Ukraine,” Stavridis stressed, noting that the Ukrainian armed forces have not yet claimed responsibility for attacks on Russian airfields, but did not deny their probable involvement. From his point of view, the Ukrainian side will continue to deny strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation, including new ones.
According to Stavridis, the purpose of the strikes on Russian airfields is to demonstrate the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In the future, the Ukrainian army may go further, but it will only strike at military targets, the former Supreme Commander of NATO’s Joint Armed Forces in Europe suggested.
He added that Western countries will try to keep Ukraine from committing more large-scale attacks in the hope of minimizing the likelihood of further escalation and direct involvement of the North Atlantic Alliance in the conflict. At the same time, the Western military-political bloc will offer the Ukrainian side more air defense missiles and may raise the issue of transferring combat aircraft, Stavridis concluded.
