Ex-adviser Reller: Merkel's policies led to Germany's dependence on Russia

During Angela Merkel’s tenure as German Chancellor, purchases of Russian gas led to Berlin’s dependence on Moscow for energy. This statement was made by Merkel’s former chief economic adviser Lars-Hendrik Röller in an interview with the Financial Times.

“As a result, we eventually became very dependent on Russian gas – that’s a fact,” Reller said.

He believes that if Germany knew what would happen in the future, it would act differently. Despite this, Merkel’s ex-adviser said that there were still advantages to buying Russian gas: the German economy was provided with high growth rates, which, according to Reller, would have been impossible otherwise.

Reller was an adviser to Merkel from 2011 to 2021.
