The organizers of the XXIII Baikal ski marathon “Baikal ski”, which will be held from April 19 to 20 on Lake Baikal near the village of Maksimikha in the Barguzinsky district of Buryatia, carried out another ice measurement. Its thickness was personally checked by Sayan Zhambalov, the father and coach of our famous skier Alisa Zhambalova.

As of April 10, the ice thickness at the route’s location is one meter. At the same time, the thickness allowed by regulations must be at least 60 centimeters, so there is still a margin of safety, and it is quite large.

The marathon organizers are also monitoring the weather in Maksimikha. She doesn’t cause any worries. At night the thermometer drops to minus values. During the day, the air warms up to only +3, maximum +5 degrees, which does not contribute to the rapid melting of ice.

The main starts of the last Baikal Marathon in Maksimikha took place on April 15, the weather did not live up to expectations and the condition of the top layer of ice did not reach the required condition, called by professional skiers, “check” – to melted snow slurry, ensuring high skiing speed. With this ice condition, experienced skiers are able to cover a distance of 50 kilometers in less than two hours, whereas on normal snow this is achieved in only 2.5 hours. In addition, too hard an ice surface on Baikal spoils the working surface of the skis.

According to the organizers of the Baikal Ski Marathon, on the first day of the competition, April 19, everyone is invited to Maksimikha – children, adults, pensioners. There will be a start at distances from 1 to 10 kilometers. The main competitions will be held on April 20 for professional skiers – at distances of 10, 20, 30 (marathon for women) and 50 (marathon for men) kilometers.

It was previously reported that a member of the expanded Russian cross-country skiing team, winner of the previous marathon, Andrei Feller, as well as Alisa Zhambalova, will take part in the Baikal Ski Marathon 2024. Representatives of the famous marathon club “RussiaLoppet” are expected to arrive and will compete in the final stage of the 2024 Cup on Lake Baikal. Significant cash prizes are promised. Buryat skiers are confident that victory in the cup will be theirs. There is very little time left to check this.

Earlier, “MK in Buryatia” said that the traditional Baikal ski marathon “Baikal ski” will gather in 2024 more than 700 athletes from 4 countries – Mongolia, China, Poland and Russia. The marathon was founded by a coach from Ust-Barguzin, Alexander Ushakov, who decided to extend the ski season by conducting training on the ice of the lake in the spring, since the snow was already melting at that time. In 2013, the race was included in the Russialoppet series of ski marathons in Russia.
