Every sixth teacher in Russia works without a higher pedagogical education

Last academic year, every sixth teacher working in Russian schools did not have a higher pedagogical education (15.9%, or 172,300 people). This follows from the data of the Higher School of Economics statistical collection “Education in Numbers”, which drew attention Vedomosti.
Most of the teachers have a higher pedagogical education (84.1%, or 911,100 people). 12.41% of teachers (134,500 people) have secondary specialized education. Another 2.75% or 29,800 teachers graduated from universities in other specialties. Data on the education of 0.74% of teachers (8000 people) are not available.
According to Rosstat, at the end of 2022, 1.08 million teachers worked in Russia. The Ministry of Education does not publish statistics on the levels of education received by teachers, such data is available only for teachers in colleges.
In June 2023, the head of the Ministry of Education, Sergei Kravtsov, proposed to start training secondary school teachers (from grade 5 to grade 9) in the system of secondary vocational education. On the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the minister said that his department was already preparing a corresponding draft of the federal state educational forum.
