Even chimpanzees like to brag

Scientists have recorded how a wild monkey shows an object to its mother – a behavior that is considered unique. A new study shows that chimpanzees ‘show off’ by sharing items they’ve just found, and are therefore even more human-like than previously thought.
British researchers filmed footage of an adult wild chimpanzee named Fiona in Uganda showing her mother a leaf she found.
Just like a small human child, Fiona sticks the leaf under her mother’s nose for a few seconds to get a better look at the find.
In the video, one chimpanzee displays another item just to get attention, a social behavior described as “exchange for the sake of exchange.”
“It has been suggested that ‘sharing to share’ is a unique human trait, but our observation of these wild chimpanzees calls this into question,” said study author Dr Claudia Wilk, from the Department of Psychology at the University of York.
The interaction took place in the Kibale National Park, close to Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
