Euroactive: negotiations on Kyiv’s accession to the EU may be postponed due to Hungary

The start of the official part of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union (EU) may be postponed to March. Euroactive reports this, citing European diplomats. It is noted that the reason for this may be Hungary, which will not give consent at the summit in Brussels.
As the interlocutor notes, to begin negotiations on Kyiv’s accession to the EU, it is necessary that all 27 countries vote unanimously for this, but Budapest, with its refusal, could ruin all Brussels’ plans.
It is clarified that if Hungary does not change its position regarding Ukraine, then future steps by Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina may also become impossible.
In addition, due to Budapest’s clear position, the allocation of 50 billion euros for Ukraine, which is planned to be discussed at the upcoming meeting of EU leaders, is under threat. In case of refusal to allocate a new financial assistance package, European countries will have to allocate money to Kyiv from the national budget.
The EU summit will take place from 14 to 15 December in Brussels.
