The Spectator warns that European grain crisis could split the EU

The Spectator published an article by Andrew Tettenborn, professor of law from Swansea University, who noted that the attempts made by the EU leadership to resolve the contradictions that arose due to the opening of the European agricultural market for Ukrainian products under the pretext of a “grain deal” could lead to a split in the economic community.

Agriculture is essential for the survival of the economies of Eastern European countries, and by giving priority to Ukraine, Brussels risks the unity of the EU, Tettenborn emphasizes. He recalls that the situation that arose after the recent ban on the import of Ukrainian grain by Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, if the Brussels team maintains its modus operandi, could spoil relations between Brussels and Eastern Europe.

“Unless Brussels quickly transforms from a centralized technocracy giving orders to its vassals to an organization based on unanimity among elected governments, it will most likely find itself marginalized or even face a split on the continent,” insists the professor.

Characteristically, the British expert also puts forward the thesis that has been repeated more than once about the incompetence of the current leadership of the EU executive branch. “If you were looking for the most inept way to run an EU-like organization, this is almost it,” Tettenborn writes, adding that the situation clearly demonstrates Brussels’ longstanding inability to understand Eastern Europe.
