EU steps up control over TikTok, YouTube and Twitter

The European Union will strengthen control over 19 online services from the end of August, reported on the website of the European Commission (EC).
The Commission today identified the first list of 17 very large online platforms (VLOPs) and two very large online search engines (VLOSEs) that fall under the Digital Services Act (DSA), passed last November. The list was generated based on user data that the services had to publish before February 17, 2023.
The list of major search engines includes the Google service and developed by Microsoft Bing search engine. The list of large online platforms includes Twitter, AliExpress, AppStore, Booking, YouTube, Wikipedia, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram (owned by Meta, which is recognized as an extremist organization in Russia and banned), etc.
Now all these companies will have to bring the work of their services in line with the DSA for work in the EU within four months (until August 25), reporting to the EC.
These commitments aim to “empower and protect online users, including minors”, assess and mitigate the systemic risks of these services, and provide robust content moderation tools.
The clarifications published on the EC website refer, in particular, to the obligation of such services to ensure thorough processing of complaints from users, to prohibit advertising based on the user’s confidential data (ethnos and political preferences), to ensure a high level of content moderation and to reduce the amount of disinformation, etc.
