ESA chief: Europe’s access to space is under threat

Josef Aschbacher, CEO of the European Space Agency, told the Financial Times that Europe could lose its independent access to space.
This, according to the ESA director general, is due to the crisis in the field of launchers and the lack of competitiveness among organizations responsible for launching satellites.
Aschbacher urged the European industry to restore this competitiveness as soon as possible.
Recall that last summer, ESA discussed with SpaceX the possibility of using its launchers to replace Russian-made Soyuz rockets.
Then Aschbacher noted that Elon Musk’s American company SpaceX is the most operational of the countries considered as a partner for backup launches. At that time, ESA was choosing which countries the agency would cooperate with in the future: India, the USA or Japan.
