On Wednesday, July 12, Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke about plans to discuss face-to-face with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin the extradition of the leaders of the Azov nationalist battalion to Ukraine (recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in Russia).
Erdogan explained that Ankara received a request from Kyiv for the extradition of six battalion commanders and decided to satisfy it. Following this, a number of statements were made from Moscow on this matter, but when “they found out the details, the situation became positive.”
The Turkish president did not elaborate on the exact details, but promised to raise the subject again in August when Russian leader Vladimir Putin arrives in Turkey.
Earlier, Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation Sergey Naryshkin noted that such actions of Ankara can be regarded as unfulfilled obligations of the Turkish side. He also stated that Russian intelligence did not contact Turkey on this issue.
State Duma deputy Oleksiy Chepa called the return of the commanders of the Azov brigade to Ukraine a very bad signal and warned that it could negatively affect Russian-Turkish relations.
