The Turkish Parliament may not consider the ratification of Sweden’s accession to NATO until autumn, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, commenting on the results of the NATO summit in Vilnius.
“I hope that the issue of Sweden’s application to NATO will become one of the priorities of the international agenda of the autumn session of the Turkish parliament,” Erdogan said (quote according to Anadolu). At the same time, the Turkish leader noted that Ankara has always supported NATO’s “open door” policy.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on July 10 following a trilateral closed meeting in Vilnius, in which Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson received, that Ankara agreed to ratify the protocol on the admission of Stockholm to the military bloc.
At the same time, the Secretary General did not name the exact date of ratification by the Turkish parliament of Sweden’s accession to the alliance. Erdogan also stipulated that the EU should clear the way for Turkey’s EU membership before Ankara approves Sweden’s bid for NATO membership.
The next day, July 11, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov declaredthat “no one wants to see Turkey in Europe.” “And here, too, our Turkish partners, probably, should not wear rose-colored glasses,” the Kremlin spokesman emphasized.
