Erdogan shames opposition leader for saying Russian meddling in Turkish elections

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged “to be ashamed” of his main rival in the elections on May 14, opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroglu, for statements about Russian interference in the presidential elections in Turkey.

On May 11, Kılıçdaroğlu accused Russia of interfering in the electoral process and, in particular, of spreading fake news about him. “Dear Russian friends, you are behind the montages, conspiracies, Deep Fake content and recordings that were exposed yesterday in this country. If you want to continue our friendship after May 15, keep your hands off the Turkish state,” he tweeted.

Earlier today in the Kremlin emphasizedthat Russia does not interfere in the internal affairs and electoral processes of other countries. “If someone provided such information to Mr. Kılıçdaroglu, then they are liars,” said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation.

In an interview published by Reuters on May 12, Kılıçdaroğlu declaredthat he allegedly has evidence of Russia’s involvement in the dissemination of false information about candidates in the run-up to the presidential elections in Turkey.

General elections in Turkey are scheduled for May 14. They will be attended by the current head of state Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the leader of the CHP Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, as well as the candidate from the nationalist alliance Sinan Ogan.
