Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was going to hold telephone conversations with Russian and Ukrainian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky after returning to Turkey from the United States. He stated this in New York, where he arrived to participate in the session of the UN General Assembly.

“Since February 24, we have been calling on Russia at every opportunity to stop hostilities and withdraw its troops from Ukraine. During our last meeting in Samarkand, we again expressed them. We have come up with various initiatives both to the Russian and Ukrainian leadership, and to world leaders in order to open the way to peace,” Erdogan said (quote according to TASS).

The Turkish leader noted that Ankara will continue its efforts to ensure peace and stability. In particular, he announced his conversation with Zelensky and Putin after returning to Turkey.

September 20 Erdogan declaredthat a reasonable diplomatic solution must be found to resolve the Ukrainian crisis. The President called on the international community to “sincerely support Turkey’s efforts to establish a lasting peace in Ukraine.” According to the President, the country will continue its efforts to end the conflict, while advocating for the preservation of the integrity of Ukraine.

Earlier, in an interview with PBS, the Turkish president said that Putin is striving to end the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible. The Turkish leader noted that he met with him as part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Uzbekistan, where, he said, the leaders held “very thorough negotiations.” Erdogan claims that the Russian president has shown that he “wants to end the conflict as soon as possible.”
