Residents of the Kaliningrad region this year will not have the opportunity to plunge into an ice hole with blessed water on the days of Epiphany bathing. Instead of the “unsafe” event, according to the Kaliningrad diocese, on January 18 and 19, believers are invited to church services.
The Kaliningrad Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church explained to Kommersant that they “have not been organizing the event for a long time, and this year will not be an exception.”
The last time the Russian Orthodox Church held mass bathing for Epiphany in the region was in 2020; more than 20 places were organized for this purpose. Since 2021, due to the coronavirus epidemic, the Kaliningrad diocese has not been organizing places for swimming, but is not opposed to this tradition.
