Employees of Russian companies living abroad are asking for salaries to be tied to the exchange rate. More than half of employers in August received requests for indexation of remuneration from such specialists, a HeadHunter survey showed. The reason was the sharp weakening of the ruble. As noted, 23% of enterprises plan to meet halfway and increase the salaries of remote workers living abroad. The same amount will be tied to payments in rubles to the dollar or euro exchange rate. Another 23% will not take any action.

True, in this case, economic and legal difficulties become an obstacle, explains head of the HeadHunter press service Alexander Dzhabarov: “We surveyed mainly medium-sized companies. Every third has employees abroad – they make up less than 5% of the staff. Since there are few of them, we conclude that these people left for personal reasons.

There was a second wave of reverse relocation in the spring. Apparently, those who do not want to return have a question about salary indexation. If they receive a salary in foreign currency, they understand that if the ruble strengthens, it will decrease.

Some companies refuse specialists because they either legally cannot tie indexation to the exchange rate, since in Russia, by law, remunerations must be paid in rubles, or these are some kind of legal schemes, when salaries are indexed literally every month, stated in the contract, calculated according to average rate. In addition, the business itself may experience currency fluctuations and may not have sufficient funds for the wage fund.”

According to HeadHunter research, more than a third of Russian companies pay foreign employees in rubles, and the same amount in the currency of their country of residence. Kommersant FM asked employers if they were ready to change the terms of cooperation due to changes in the exchange rate:

Owner Mr. Doors Maxim Valetsky: “We decided that we will not raise him. We don’t have many of these. I think that the uniqueness of employees abroad may only exist in IT. Rather, we are meeting those who are allowed to work abroad halfway. Unique specialties for us are production workers, offline sellers, offline designers. They have a negotiating position. But those who work abroad remotely do not have one. Their services are not unique.

Co-founder of the Bitrix24 service Sergey Ryzhikov: “We receive such requests – around 10%, probably. They are connected with the exchange rate, and with the fact that the guys work abroad, and in general with inflation expectations, with some additional expenses. I would probably even say that inflationary pressure is perceived to be greater. And during the summer we are carrying out some indexing for a number of positions and for employees.”

Co-founder of VINCI Agency Maria Lapuk: “We had such requests, but not now, but much earlier. As an employer, I probably don’t think this is the right story. It seems that those who are in a rather hopeless situation are doing this when a large percentage of the staff has left. It is really difficult for them to replace employees in this case. We didn’t raise it because the exchange rate jumped a lot. He was both 100 and 55. When he was 55, I apparently had to lower my salary. We have a staffing table, grades, and everyone is remunerated according to the staffing table and position.”

On September 13, the Ministry of Economic Development improved its forecast for real wage growth. The department expects that this year they will increase by more than 6%, and not by 5.4%, as previously thought. Last year, real wages of Russians grew by 0.3%.
