Electronic rights and other innovations for motorists

Russian motorists can now present their driver’s licenses electronically. Testing of the system began in early October, and recently, driver’s licenses and vehicle registration certificates (CTCs) in electronic form became available in the State Services Auto mini-application on the VKontakte social network. We will tell you how to present electronic rights and STS to traffic police officers, as well as what other innovations await drivers.

To present an electronic driver’s license or STS to the traffic police inspector, you need:

– go to the VKontakte application;

– in the “Services” tab, open “Public Services”;

– select the “Auto” section;

– log in through “Gosuslugi”.

After authorization in the application, you will be able to see information about the car, as well as QR codes with the data of the driver’s license and STS. In this case, the rights are displayed as three successive QR codes, and the inspector must scan them all.

Meanwhile, until changes are made to the traffic rules, the driver must also have paper versions of documents with him. Otherwise, the inspector may impose an appropriate fine, and in the absence of a STS, send the car to the impound lot.

These rules are in effect until at least March 1, 2023.

Since that time, other changes have been introduced regarding car owners.

As reported on the Internet platform Explain.rffrom March should come into force resolution Government of the Russian Federation, according to which the rules for obtaining and canceling a driver’s license will change. So, for an exam in the traffic police, it will not be necessary to bring a medical certificate on the presence or absence of contraindications to driving a car. The traffic police will request this information electronically on their own.

Those who have an expired passport, other identity document, or medical certificate will not be allowed to take the exam.

And the driver’s license will be canceled if they are issued on the basis of false documents or in violation of the rules, as well as if the driver has medical contraindications to driving a vehicle or he did not pass the next medical examination on time.

We also recall the innovation that came into force in April this year: driver’s licenses, which expire before December 31, 2023, are automatically renewed for another three years. You will only need to change your expired license if you intend to drive abroad. However, most drivers who rent a car abroad have an international license, which they present to local police representatives.
