Egyptian authorities accuse American film producers of distorting history because of black Cleopatra
The Egyptian leadership has announced a gross distortion of history by the American film company Netflix. So the authorities regarded the choice of a black actress for the role of Cleopatra in the new series. The film is released on May 10th.
The main role in the film “Queen Cleopatra” was played by black actress Adele James. At the same time, the film company called the decision made a tribute to the centuries-old dispute about the race of the ruler. The response to film producers followed at the highest level. The Egyptian government issued a statement, which was published on the website of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. Officials said coins and statues from Cleopatra’s time depicted a fair-skinned woman. And the director general of the High Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri, stressed that the appearance of the black Cleopatra is a falsification of Egyptian history and a blatant historical misconception.”
Cleopatra VII reigned in ancient Egypt from 51 to 30 BC. Her contemporaries, the Roman writers Cassius Dio and Plutarch, stated that the ruler was fair-skinned and of Macedonian origin.
