A disabled prisoner who fought for the right to enter a courtroom in Samara eventually beat the system, but in a rather unexpected way. He was placed under house arrest.
As MK learned, an unusual incident occurred with 66-year-old Gennady Kazantsev. He was arrested by the Samara Railway Court and placed in a pre-trial detention center.
Each new meeting to extend the preventive measure turned into torture for him. The fact is that Kazantsev walks poorly, and the courtroom is located on the 3rd floor of the court building. At the same time, the building has an elevator that can also transport prisoners.
However, Kazantsev, like other defendants, was denied the right to use the lifting mechanism. At first, the guards referred to the fact that the elevator was broken, but when the prisoners managed to find out that the elevator was working, they began to refuse them without explanation.
After each rise, Kazantsev, whose hands were handcuffed, began to choke, lose consciousness, and they even called an ambulance. The accused reported his problem to the judge, but the situation did not change. As a result, Kazantsev wrote a complaint to human rights activists.
According to unofficial information, the unspoken ban on transporting prisoners in elevators applies not only in this court, but also in many other regions. It was introduced after a high-profile attack by members of the famous GTA gang on guards during a trial in the Moscow Regional Court on August 1, 2017.
Nevertheless, Kazantsev managed to achieve his goal – and even with greater success than he expected. The court changed his measure of restraint – he was released under house arrest. Therefore, now the accused can decide for himself how to get to the courtroom – by stairs or by elevator.
