Paleobiologist Dunn proposes renaming dozens of “offensively” named dinosaur species
Paleobiologist Emma Dunn has proposed renaming 89 of the 1,500 names of dinosaur fossils from the Mesozoic era.
Dunn said some ancient animal names could be described as “potentially offensive” because they could be interpreted as sexist or racist, or honor controversial historical figures.
The official position of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature is that species should be renamed only if the name violates the formal requirements of zoological nomenclature.
