Vice President of the Dominican Republic Raquel Peña said the country’s leadership is positive about the Organization of American States (OAS) proposal for mediation to resolve the dispute with Haiti over the Masacre River, which divides the two Caribbean countries. She noted that the Dominican Republic is seeking dialogue and views the OAS proposal in a positive light. Peña stressed the importance of sitting down, discussing the problem and finding a solution.
In mid-September, the Dominican Republic decided to cut ties with Haiti due to tensions over a dispute over the construction of a canal from the Masacre River, which divides the two countries. Haitian farmers began work on the project earlier this month, arguing that it is necessary for agricultural development. However, the Dominican Republic believes that the project is harming farmers on their side of the river. President Luis Abinader said that such construction without proper engineering justification is a provocation that the government cannot accept.
