Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on the celebration of September 30 as the Day of Reunification of New Regions with Russia. Document published on the official Internet portal of legal information.

The law proposes to equate the day of entry of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions with the days of military glory.

The law was introduced for consideration by the State Duma by the President of Russia on September 12. Deputies approved it on September 19, 2023, and the Federation Council approved it on September 25. The law came into force on September 28.

The explanatory note to the document stated that the new regions were reunited with Russia, including on the basis of the historical community of peoples living in these territories. In addition, reunification was “the result of the expression of the will of millions of people, their exercise of their inalienable right to freely and without outside interference determine their political status and carry out their economic, social and cultural development.”

September 30, 2022 Putin signed agreements on the entry of new territories into Russia with the heads of the DPR and LPR, as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. In September of this year, elections of heads of constituent entities of the Russian Federation were held in new regions under Russian legislation. As a result, Evgeny Balitsky and Vladimir Saldo were elected governors of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, respectively, and Leonid Pasechnik and Denis Pushilin were elected heads of the LPR and DPR.
