Hepatitis C can be contracted through visiting the dentist or through unprotected sex. At the same time, the virus will not be itself for a long time exercisegradually destroying the liver. This was reported by Natalya Vasilyeva, hepatologist, gastroenterologist at the SM-Clinic medical center.
She explained that hepatitis C was called the “gentle killer” because of its ability to remain silent for a long time and gradually destroy the liver. The disease is often stigmatized, since at a late stage, when liver fibrosis is already formed, an excess amount of connective tissue appears in the organ. In advanced cases, hepatitis C causes hepatocellular cancer.
The doctor added that at the acute stage of the disease, the symptoms coincide with signs of hepatitis B. Rapid fatigue, high fever, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite and abdominal pain, lightening of feces and darkening of urine were recorded. According to Vasilyeva, a third of cases of hepatitis B is accompanied by yellowing of the skin and sclera of the eyes.
The main route of transmission of hepatitis C is the blood of an infected person. It can be obtained at a tattoo parlor, through a blood transfusion, at a dentist’s office, or during unprotected intercourse.
The expert explained that the virus is especially dangerous because it gradually and imperceptibly disrupts the structure and functions of the liver. But modern medicine successfully fights it with the help of specific antiviral therapy. The course of treatment takes two to three months. Treatment gives a result in 98-99% after the first course in patients who have not previously been treated for the disease.
