Dissident and founder of the Glasnost Foundation Sergei Grigoryants dies

Dissident and human rights activist Sergei Grigoryants has died at the age of 81. His daughter Anna announced his death on Facebook (the social network belongs to Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation). The cause of death was not specified.

In 1970-1980, Mr. Grigoryants served two prison terms for criticizing the Soviet regime. In 1987 he founded the Glasnost magazine and the human rights foundation of the same name. The publication criticized the current authorities at that time, it was closed in 1991. After the collapse of the USSR, he criticized the policies of the Russian authorities, including for the war in Chechnya. He opposed the decisions of President Vladimir Putin, including on the events in Ukraine.
