A wheelchair user was not allowed on the plane at Sheremetyevo Airport. Ivan Vershok was returning home to Chelyabinsk on March 3 by flight at 14:40. The reason for the failure is too much battery capacity on the electric wheelchair. The man assures that he flew with this wheelchair many times, never had any problems. The prosecutor’s office has already taken up the case, and we found out the details first-hand.
REFERENCE “MK”: Ivan Vershok has been suffering from cerebral palsy since childhood. He is well known in his hometown, a few years ago he worked as a DJ in a nightclub. And last year, residents of Chelyabinsk chipped in for an electric wheelchair for him, collecting 500,000 rubles.
– Who exactly denied you boarding the plane?
– At the front desk I was asked to wait. An hour and a half later, an employee of the airline for technical security came up, looked at the stroller’s battery and said that it was too powerful, and they would not let me on the plane with it. He didn’t have a badge, he didn’t look me in the eye, I don’t know his name. I said that I flew the same airline to Moscow on March 2 without any problems, to which this man told me that I could buy a more powerful battery in Moscow. Naturally, I didn’t do it.
– You asked you to return the money for the ticket?
– Yes, and asked to give me a written refusal to board the plane. None of this was done.
– Have you contacted the airline office?
– Yes, I had to call my friends who were seeing me off. Since parking there is very expensive, they have already left. They returned to the airport, and together we went to the office, the company, but nothing was achieved there either. I ended up having to ask my buddies to buy another ticket for the next morning. We contacted a representative of another airline, there were no problems because of the stroller.
How long did you have to wait for the next flight?
– I arrived at the airport at about 12 noon, I was supposed to leave at 14:40, and finally flew away only at 7 in the morning. As a result, I spent almost 20 hours at the airport.
– How much did the second ticket cost?
– The second ticket was bought by my friends, it cost 5400 rubles. I bought the first ticket back in November, and it was much cheaper.
– Did someone from the airline contact you later? Did they offer any compensation or apologize?
– Yes, they called, asked for documents for an electric wheelchair, and I sent them. A lot of wheelchair users complain about this air carrier, something needs to be done about this, I want this company to change its attitude towards disabled people.
Meanwhile, the rules of the airline that refused Ivan stipulate that electric wheelchairs powered by such batteries can be transported as an exception. Upon arrival, Ivan Vershok wrote a statement to the prosecutor’s office in order to protect his rights. In the future, the man plans to sue the airline to demand moral compensation.
By the way, not later than in early January, the Lukhovitsky City Court satisfied a similar claim of a disabled person against the same airline – they refused to let a man on board if he had a ticket because of an electric wheelchair. Themis punished the carrier for 225 thousand rubles. But for some reason, that example did not teach transport workers anything.
