Court in Moscow arrests director Berkovich for two months in the case of justifying terrorism
The Zamoskvoretsky Court of Moscow granted the petition of the investigation and issued a decision on arrest for a period of two months for director Yevgenia Berkovich. As previously reported, director and playwright Svetlana Petriychuk was detained on charges of justifying terrorism in their play Finist the Bright Falcon, which tells about women married to radical Islamists. In 2022, the production won two nominations of the Golden Mask theater award – the best work of a playwright and the best costumes.
Berkovich’s defense asked the court to choose a preventive measure not related to deprivation of liberty. Lawyers asked to attach to the case diplomas of the performance, personal guarantees, as well as documents confirming the disability of Berkovich’s children. The defense also offered to post a bail in any amount that would satisfy the court, and insisted that the criminal case was based on an examination conducted with violations.
After Berkovich’s arrest, searches were carried out in her apartment, as well as in her mother’s apartment, and the police confiscated the equipment. Petreychuk was detained at Vnukovo airport.
The defendants in the case plead not guilty. They can face up to 7 years in prison.
