He was 90 years old
At the age of 90, Lev Efimovich Kolodny passed away. For many years he was a regular contributor to Moskovsky Komsomolets – our editorial “portfolio” contains three parts of his new Moscow studies essays from the “Journey to Moscow” series, recently sent by Lev Efimovich, already ready for publication.
And live correspondence with him in the mail:
“Leva, hello! Pokrovsky Boulevard is out, send more!”
“I am sending the entire Yauzsky Boulevard. Confirm receipt.”
And suddenly: “I’m in the hospital. But they promise to be discharged in a few days.”
Today is sad news. Lev Kolodny died…
To say that a terrific journalist, Moscow historian, biographer, researcher, writer has left is not enough. A whole era has gone, a century contained in one person, who, as they say in MK, sitting down at the table, can quickly roll up an encyclopedia, a small one, three or four volumes, but from “A” to “Z”.
His Moscow, History, Literature, People – in amazing faces, numerous facts, amazing discoveries, touches and nuances of the time, known only to him, because Leo knew them thoroughly, met with a mass of sources, took out the rarest documents from the archives.
Encyclopedic knowledge, inexhaustible capacity for work, exemplary journalistic and research acumen – all this is Lev Kolodny. Thousands of articles, dozens of books – that’s what he did and did until his last breath.
His achievement of the world order – he found the manuscripts of The Quiet Flows the Don.
“If he had lived in the 19th century, he would have been able to get out of the fire and save for us the second volume of Dead Souls. But we were lucky – he is our contemporary, ”wrote MK on one of his anniversaries.
We were triple lucky that until the last day Lev remained a columnist for Moskovsky Komsomolets, a member of our large team.
We were always there, he was always there. Huge loss. The memory of him will remain forever.
The editors of “MK” expresses deep condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.
