Sergei Grigoryants, a well-known Soviet dissident, former political prisoner, journalist and founder of the Glasnost human rights foundation, has died at the age of 82. This was announced in social networks by the daughter of Grigoryants – Anna.

Sergei Grigoryants was one of the brightest representatives of the intelligentsia of the USSR, who became famous for his public speeches in defense of human rights and freedom of speech.

In 1975, he was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison on charges of “distributing deliberately false fabrications discrediting the Soviet state and social system” (selling several foreign publications to a friend), as well as speculation (reselling drawings and paintings – Grigoryants stated that his actions did not go beyond the normal activities of collectors, that is, the exchange of some items for others and the release of the collection from unnecessary items

After his release from prison, Grigoryants took up journalism and created the Glasnost human rights foundation, which became one of the most authoritative and influential in Russia. He continued to defend his beliefs until the last days of his life.
