State Duma deputy Mikhail Sheremet said that he would send a request to the Constitutional Court of Russia about the grounds for lifting the moratorium on the death penalty. Previously, Speaker of Parliament Vyacheslav Volodin explainedthat a decision of the Constitutional Court is sufficient to lift the moratorium.

“I intend to update my legislative initiative, developed several years ago, and send a request to the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation for legal grounds for lifting the moratorium on the death penalty in our country,” Mikhail Sheremet told reporters (quoted by “RIA News”).

The deputy added that the issue of returning the death penalty is debatable and requires a balanced approach. Mr. Sheremet himself believes that terrorists and their accomplices, as well as pedophiles and drug dealers, should be subject to such punishment. As an option, he also proposed introducing the death penalty only for the duration of a military operation on the territory of Ukraine.

The news is being updated.
