State Duma deputy Sultan Khamzaev (United Russia) proposed adopting a federal law on the Russian people. According to the deputy, he would call the people of the Russian Federation not multinational, but Russian, reports “RIA News”.

“I believe that the country should have a federal law on the Russian people. There are many nations in Russia, but one people. The Russian people, which includes all national groups. We use the phrase “multinational people of the Russian Federation”. I would say: the Russian people of the Russian Federation,” Sultan Khamzaev told the agency.

The deputy said that before there were Soviet people, and then a “play on words” began. In his opinion, society in the Russian Federation is ripe for the introduction of the concept of “Russian people” into everyday use. He emphasized that the Russian people today are the Slavs, they are the multinational people of Dagestan, Tatarstan, Chechnya, Bashkiria, Udmurtia, and Yakutia. According to Sultan Khamzaev, sometimes the concept of “Russian” is used incorrectly by officials, artificially narrowing it.

“The Russians are like Yeltsin…” the deputy added. According to him, belonging to a people was judged by language, so “globally he himself is Russian.” At the same time, he noted that the initiative does not belittle the importance of national languages, because they are “inscribed in their republican constitutions,” but “we are all people of the Russian world.”
