Deputy head of the IAEA, head of the department of nuclear energy Mikhail Chudakov told RIA Novosti that an artillery shell hitting the spent fuel containment on the territory of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant could lead to the effect of a “dirty bomb”.
“There is no need to look for bombs in the form of a bomb,” said Chudakov.
He added that the containment, which is a concrete wall, does not withstand artillery strikes. Chudakov also said that he “saw a hole two meters in diameter in the Bushehr nuclear power plant” in Iran, which was hit by a rocket, it “melted through the containment wall.” There was no fuel in the storage at that time, Chudakov noted.
