An old toothbrush can be a “hotbed of infection” that can hinder the healing process after SARS, COVID-19 and other diseases, as the head physician of the Megastom clinic, dentist Vladimir Losev, said.
According to the expert, toothbrushes, even with careful care, can become a source of bacteria due to the fact that they are constantly in contact with plaque. Losev clarified that after the extraction or implantation of teeth, as well as the treatment of periodontitis or gingivitis, the toothbrush should be washed harder than usual. In addition, a person who has had ARVI, tonsillitis, coronavirus or other diseases should keep his brush separate from the brushes of loved ones, the dentist warned.
As the specialist noted, microorganisms and viruses deposited on toothbrushes can cause inflammation of the mucosa or interfere with complete recovery, turning infections into chronic ones. He stressed that if the brush is not replaced in time, the throat will become inflamed regularly even with a healthy lifestyle.
The dentist recalled that microbes also settle on the side of the brush intended for cleaning the tongue. Losev also noted that it is necessary to replace the toothbrush with a new one every 2-3 months.
