The Danish authorities are preparing a large-scale restructuring of the conscription system. As part of this reform, women will begin to be drafted into the army for military service on an equal basis with men. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen spoke about this on Wednesday, March 13.

The head of the defense department confirmed that in the new system, all youth, regardless of gender, will be called up for military service. Presumably this will happen from 2026.

As part of the notorious reform, the total number of conscripts in Denmark is planned to be increased from 4.7 thousand to 5 thousand people.

At the same time, the duration of compulsory military service will almost triple, from four to 11 months. Poulsen explained this decision by saying that “longer service will strengthen the skills of conscripts.”

This announcement was preceded by a message from the head of the Danish Cabinet, Mette Frederiksen, that state budget expenditures in 2024 and 2025 will increase from 1.4% to 2.4% of GDP. The Prime Minister emphasized that “Denmark should not be a country that others defend.”

Meanwhile, the Russian army, according to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, remains the most combat-ready in the world. The head of the Russian defense department emphasized that the longer the fighting continues in Ukraine as part of the Russian special military operation, the stronger the Russian Armed Forces become.
