In the high-profile case of businessman Oleg Medvedev (known as Shishkan), accused of murder and leadership in an organized crime group, they could not choose a jury. One of the 18 defendants, Yuri Ofitserov, was not brought to court. The day before, he was transferred to intensive care in a prison psychiatric hospital due to an attack on an employee of the Butyrka pre-trial detention center.
The incident with the attack occurred on April 15 at lunchtime. Yuri Ofitserov was in the Butyrka psychiatric hospital for planned treatment (in general, this is not his first “visit” to such an institution, before that the accused was taken there, including after failed suicide attempts, one of which was on New Year’s Eve). This time, Ofitserov considered the actions of the deputy on-duty assistant of the pre-trial detention center provocative (according to some reports, he tried to take away his personal belongings) and punched him in the face. An employee of the isolation ward was hospitalized with a diagnosis of “closed craniocerebral injury” and “contusion of the soft tissues of the zygomatic arch.”
Officerov was then isolated in a single-bed chamber and transferred to intensive care. They were afraid to bring him to court in such a state. And since Ofitserov, by law, has the right to see juror candidates and ask them questions, the selection had to be postponed indefinitely. It is noteworthy that the participants in the process asked to separate the Ofitserov case into a separate proceeding precisely because of his mental problems. The investigation considered that in this way they were trying to remove him from criminal liability as insane (despite the fact that there are no results of a psychiatric examination to confirm this).
Interestingly, the next day after the incident with Ofitserov, another prisoner attacked the junior inspector of the same Butyrka. Moreover, in addition to the fact that the prisoner broke his head, he also managed to break his finger.
