December 9 in the folk calendar has several names at once – St. George’s Day, Yury Kholodny and Yegory Zimny. On this day, it is recommended to pay off all debts – there is a sign that then the next year will be financially successful.

Everyone heard about St. George’s Day at least out of the corner of their ear. Including thanks to the saying “Here’s to you, grandmother, and St. George’s Day”, which is used, expressing disappointment in connection with unfulfilled hopes. And this saying appeared several centuries ago, when in Rus’ serfs were forbidden to move from one landowner to another. In the 11th – 16th centuries, peasants could change their owner once a year, namely on St. George’s Day, on November 26 according to the old style and on December 9 – according to the new one. And at the end of the 16th century, after the introduction of the ban, the serfs lost all hope of somehow changing and improving their lives. Hence the saying.

By St. George’s Day, persistent frosty weather was established. It was believed that from that time on, hungry wolves should be feared in the forests. But you don’t need to be afraid of bears anymore – by this day they all plunge into hibernation.

Men went fishing that day and tried to catch as many fish as possible – it was believed that a good catch portends financial stability next year, but if not a single fish can be pulled out, financial problems cannot be avoided. It was impossible to hunt and generally offend any animals – there was a sign that their patron Yegoriy would bring misfortune and misfortune to the whole family of those who violated the ban.

Also, our ancestors believed that visiting the bathhouse on St. George’s Day is useful only for men, but if a woman decides to take a steam bath, she can get sick.

Financial affairs, according to folk signs, should be postponed to another time. It is believed that transactions concluded on this day will not bring income. Shopping is also not recommended – purchases will not be successful.

In addition, it is better to give up alcoholic beverages today – it is believed that on this day alcohol is especially dangerous for the health and successful life of a person. From food, it is worth giving preference to sweet foods, such as jam, fruits and berries.

You can not quarrel and sort things out – the consequences can be very unpleasant. You can not wear worn or holey clothes – to health problems.
