“A journalist must be an encyclopedist”
Dean of the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University Elena Leonidovna Vartanova told MK what is now being emphasized in the preparation of future journalists, as well as what they are – the current students of journalism.
– How do you ensure that teachers keep up with the times when preparing future journalists?
– Just now, with a group of teachers from the faculty of journalism, we visited the editorial office of the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper, visiting the editor-in-chief Pavel Nikolaevich Gusev. This is also part of the renewal of work with teachers, part of improving their qualifications.
By the way, twelve years ago, Pavel Nikolaevich invited us to the editorial office, we watched how the work of Moskovsky Komsomolets was changing in the digital era. Since then, we have established good contact. Very often, many journalism departments reproach that teachers do not know the realities of journalism and editorial practice. But just today, having visited the editorial office, we refute this.
Yes, many may not work for the newspaper as staff members, but we have very close ties. And thanks to that twelve-year-old invitation to the editorial office, we began systematic work on interaction with employers. We hold regular meetings, together we discuss the necessary skills that we must form in students.
Teachers, their qualifications are a very important part of university education. For many years we have been holding a winter school for advanced training, when we discuss new areas of work for 3-4 days. Teachers design new courses, model possible outcomes. All this helps not only to renew the notion of the modern editorial staff among honored teachers, but also to involve new, young teachers in the process.
This year we held a psychological and pedagogical school for training in working with “digital” students – those who spend a significant part of their lives online.
– What do you consider the most important for journalism teachers?
– We must evaluate the significance of final exams, when practitioners from editorial offices come to the state commission together with teachers. And, of course, it is necessary to continue to develop interaction with the editors in the form of practical exercises. We can say that our teachers learn no less than students. Only they study during the holidays, when students are no longer studying.
– What are they, the current students of the faculty of journalism?
– Firstly, students are now “digital”. We understand that they have a rather virtuoso technical literacy, they know how to record video on their phones, process sound, transfer all this to each other … But, as before, they need a broad education. It is obvious that their encyclopedic quality is still suffering, and a journalist, no doubt, must have extensive knowledge. And, of course, students should read a lot. They themselves understand this. And in this sense, we are a happy faculty, because we have huge lists of Russian literature, foreign literature … Our guys master all this.
Our students, as it has always been at the Faculty of Journalism, are very striving for justice. And when they come to journalism, they confirm this. In the first year, when you ask them why you came to journalism, they very often answer: “I came to learn how to tell people the truth!” They don’t even always say “learn” – they think they already know how to tell the truth… And so – they are the same as all young Russians – cheerful, look to the future, believe in themselves. I would like them to still believe in the profession – we also teach them this.
