The defense of 26-year-old Daria Trepova intends to appeal the verdict of the Western District Military Court, which appointed 27 years in prison. She was found guilty of a terrorist attack in a cafe in St. Petersburg, which resulted in the death of military correspondent Vladlen Tatarsky.

“I assume that we will appeal the verdict. We consider it illegal and unfounded. This is probably the most cruel sentence against a woman in Russia in the entire history of modern justice, although there was no reason for this, even if we hypothetically assume that Daria is guilty,” lawyer Daniil Berman told reporters (quoted by RIA Novosti).

Daria Trepova was found guilty under paragraph “b” of Part 3 of Art. 205 (terrorist attack), part 4 of Art. 222.1 (illegal acquisition, transfer, storage of explosive devices), Part 4 of Art. 327 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (use of a fake driver’s license). The defendant pleaded guilty only to the last article.

The prosecution asked Daria Trepova to be sentenced to 28 years in prison and a fine of 800 thousand rubles. The court also imposed a fine of 600 thousand rubles on her. In addition, the court recovered 16,495 thousand rubles from her. in civil suits. The maximum punishment under all articles for women is 30 years.

On April 2, 2023, Daria Trepova presented military correspondent Vladlen Tatarsky with a figurine with explosives during an event in a cafe in St. Petersburg. As a result of the explosion, a military commander was killed and more than 50 people were injured. The investigation believes that the terrorist attack was organized by the ex-leader of the National Bolshevik Party (recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) Roman Popkov, as well as his accomplice Yuri Denisov. Daria Trepova’s defense claims that she acted on instructions from her curators, but did not know about the explosives in the figurine. According to her, she thought there was a listening device inside the figurine.
