British media announced the success of the Russian Federation in a new international conflict in the Arctic
Western countries have great difficulties in the new “global war” in the Arctic region, while Russia is already in an advantageous position due to the presence of an icebreaker fleet and technology, writes columnist for the British Daily Mail newspaper David Averre.
He noted that Moscow already has the largest icebreaker fleet in the world. “Russia has a significant advantage [в Арктике] thanks to dozens of operating icebreakers, including nuclear ones,” the observer writes.
Nicolas Juan, an expert on defense and European security at the British analytical institute RAND Europe, notes that, for example, the UK has only one icebreaker on the move, while the US has two. He calls this gap in potential key.
According to the Daily Mail, the Russian Federation has invested huge amounts of money in the development of the military component in the Arctic. British Army veteran and current Civitas analyst Rob Clarke noted that the West has yet to realize the power of the Russian Federation in the Arctic region, and while the West is focused on Ukraine, the Russian Navy is testing submarines and hypersonic missiles in the Arctic, expanding its presence and increasing its potential. Experts also noted that Moscow has control over the northern sea routes, which foreign states can only access with permission.
Earlier, Washington announced the expansion of its own part of the continental shelf in the Arctic. It occupies an area primarily in the Arctic and Bering Sea, an area of growing strategic importance also claimed by Canada and Russia.
