Czech President Petr Pavel, who was elected in January, took the oath and took office, reported on the official website of the President of the Republic.

“The inauguration in the Vladislav Hall of the Prague Castle was observed by parliamentarians, senators, members of the government, diplomats and both previous presidents,” the press service added.

Pavel won the elections on January 28, then his rival was the billionaire and former Czech prime minister Andrej Babiš. Pavel was supported by more than 3 million voters – 58.3%, which was a record in the history of presidential elections in the republic.

The new president received support among residents of large cities, intellectuals, youth, people aged 30 to 45 years. He became the fourth President of the Republic of the Czech Republic, formed in 1993, succeeding Milos Zeman in this position.

Pavel is an ex-General of the Army of the Czech Republic and former Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. While serving as chairman of the alliance committee, Pavel tried to improve relations between NATO and Russia. After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, he repeatedly expressed support for Kyiv. In his opinion, the country should negotiate with the Russian Federation, but “with an emphasis on respect for the sovereignty of other countries.”
