A radioactive isotope of potassium-40 was deposited on the surface of the cards.
Playing cards with a 440-fold increased background radiation were found by Domodedovo customs officers from a passenger from Dubai.
As it became known to “MK”, the gambler turned out to be a Vietnamese citizen who tried to carry dangerous baggage through the “green” corridor, but the radiation control system worked. In the pocket of the lady’s raincoat, the customs officers found two marked decks. With the help of a radiometer-spectrometer, customs officers found out that the radioactive isotope of potassium-40, hazardous to health, was deposited on the surface of the cards. Experts compare this excess of natural background with a chest x-ray taken 1000 times in a row if the cards are held in the hands for a long time, or stored in a pocket of clothing.
For your information, playing decks spotted with radiation are used by scammers – a dosimeter hidden in a person can work at close range and identify the desired card. The radioactive decks were taken away from the gambler and placed in a special protective safe. Soon dangerous cards will be disposed of.
