Customs officers found almost 200 g of parasitic fungi of the Cordyceps sinensis species in a parcel from India. About it reported in the press service of the Federal Customs Service.
“When scanning a postal item in Moscow, the inspector saw objects on the monitor screen that looked like knots. During the subsequent inspection of the box, customs officers found dried caterpillars inside, from which fruiting bodies sprouted, ”added the press service of the department.
The parcel was intended for a resident of the Moscow region and is estimated at 1 million rubles. The sender also valued 200 g of mushrooms at 200 rupees ($2.4).
There were no documents for the import of goods into Russia, so the customs officers refused to let the parcel into the country and returned it to the sender.
The press service of the customs service noted that Chinese cordyceps is the most expensive mushroom used in oriental medicine. The parasitic fungus infects caterpillars of silkworm butterflies, while its extract is used as a dietary supplement for heart disease and oncology. In popular culture, cordyceps is associated with the cult computer game The Last of Us and the TV series of the same name. According to his story, the substance of this mushroom caused a pandemic and turned humanity into zombies.
