Cryosphere: Greenland’s largest glacier has shrunk due to global warming

Magazine cryosphereciting scientists from the Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research, said that due to extreme melting caused by global warming, Greenland’s largest glacier has decreased by 42%.
According to experts, due to the influx of warm Atlantic intermediate waters, the subglacial channel led to the melting of the Nyogalvfjordsbra glacier at its base.
“Such subglacial melting has led to a decrease in the total surface area of the glacier. During the summer months, melting occurs at a rate of 150 meters per year. At the same time, in one place the surface of the glacier has dropped by 57 meters since 2010,” the newspaper writes.
It is clarified that at present this glacier can melt both from above and from below, since only 190 meters of ice remain above this subglacial channel.
