What will happen to the tourist season after the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station

The destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station may adversely affect the water supply of the Crimea. However, the inhabitants of the peninsula are not particularly worried about possible water shortages. People complain about the disastrous holiday season: “The beaches are empty, there is no one in the cafe, there are no tourists in the hotels.”

“There is no threat of flooding in Crimea. However, there is a risk that the North Crimean Canal will become shallow,” the head of the region Sergey Aksenov reassured the townspeople. He added that there is more than enough drinking water on the peninsula, and work is underway to minimize water losses in the canal. But he made it clear that the final dynamics and risks could be assessed in the coming days.

We asked the residents of Crimea whether they feel calm in this situation.

Taras from Feodosia answered our question about the possible lack of water: “I don’t even think about interruptions in water supply. While everything is there, the pressure in the tap is normal. Specifically, in our city there are no problems with water and there were not even after 2014. For 10 years, the water was turned off only for a couple of days. I don’t give a damn.”

Anastasia from Nikolaevka is also not worried: “I’m fine with water, I don’t care. There is no excitement in the stores, no one rushed to buy water. People lived and live like that. There are plenty of other concerns. Problems will be dealt with as they come. Yes, we are not accustomed to live without water.

Evpatoria resident Ivan confirms the absence of panic: “In any case, there was no information on water. There is plenty of water, no one stocks up. But my friend lives in Genichesk, Kherson region. A couple of hours after the information about the destruction of the hydroelectric power station, they turned off all the water. But even there, people are not particularly panicking. I ask him: how will you be without water? He replies: there is a sea, we can handle it.

Meanwhile, a small commotion occurred in Kerch. The local administration announced the restriction of water supply in several areas in connection with the repair work on June 7. Wrote that the shutdown is planned. People ran to the store to buy drinking water.

We do not believe in such coincidences that the shutdown was allegedly planned for a long time. Just in case, we stocked up on drinking water,” says a resident of Kerch. – But in general, everything is fine with water in the city. There are local interruptions, but we are used to it, we have been like this for a long time: either there is water or not. But this situation will definitely scare away tourists. And so to us, especially no one has yet reached, although the season has begun. People complain that our prices are higher than all over the Crimea, and the city itself is clearly not fabulous, unkempt, eternal mess and repairs. Not even close to Yalta. If tourists come, prices will go up even more. Who will like this?

Gennady, a resident of Yalta, posted a photo of half-empty beaches on social networks: “I remember that earlier at that time it was full of people, the cafes were full, you couldn’t find a free sunbed. Even on the wild beach there were queues. It seems that everything is in the past. Now the season was opened by refugees from Kherson, who moved here. No one else needs all this. Obviously, the year will be unprofitable in terms of the resort business. You won’t be able to make money.”

Yulia from Yevpatoria agrees: “No one thinks about water shortages. Many don’t even know what happened. Everyone lives one day. And we are not afraid to be left without water if something happens, we have lived without it for so many years. We had an accident that year. The city has an ancient water supply system, they promised to make a new one in a past life. In fact, only “patches” are installed, and in another place it breaks. So we carried technical water in eggplants for two weeks. Standing in the heat in line for a water carrier is an unpleasant experience. At the moment, deserted resorts are more annoying. Cafes are empty, hotels without tourists. Silence in Yevpatoriya.

Svetlana from Sevastopol also does not worry about water: “The city has its own wells, you should not be afraid. And there is no holiday season with water. And it won’t.”

Dmitry lives in Simferopol. In his opinion, there are no tourists in the region, because there is nothing special to do there: “You can come to Crimea once or twice. Everyone who wanted to see the peninsula has already looked. Going again is pointless. The infrastructure here is weak and there is nothing interesting if you are not a fan of mountain hiking. Only a connoisseur of color and exoticism, like me, will rejoice at the narrow streets of Alupka, the old, endlessly built-up Yalta, the deserted wide embankment of Lower Kastopol. For normal people, these are all complexities and nonsense. And roasting in the sun for days on end has long gone out of fashion.
