Deputy Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Land Forces of the Russian Armed Forces (AF) Colonel-General Alexander Lentsov has been appointed commander of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh, says in a newsletter on the activities of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in the zone of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
“From April 25, 2023, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Land Forces of the RF Armed Forces, Colonel General Lentsov A.I., was appointed commander of the Russian peacekeeping contingent,” the document says.
In 2013, by presidential decree, he was appointed Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces. He was relieved of this position by a similar decree and appointed adviser to the Minister of Defense. Lentsov also took part in military operations in Syria. In 2016, he was deputy commander for commandant’s offices of the Russian Armed Forces grouping in this country.
On April 23, the State Border Service of Azerbaijan installed a checkpoint in the Lachin corridor, on the only road connecting the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) with Armenia. Earlier, Baku accused Yerevan of transferring military, ammunition, including mines, and other military supplies to Karabakh. In this regard, Azerbaijan decided to establish a checkpoint.
In response, the Armenian Foreign Ministry indicated on the illegality of the installation by Azerbaijan of the checkpoint in the Lachin corridor. Yerevan also called on Russia to lift the blockade of the Lachin corridor and ensure the withdrawal of Azerbaijani forces from the entire security zone of the corridor. The Azerbaijani authorities insist on the legitimacy of their actions. Today, April 26, Armenia applied to the International Court of Justice on this issue.
