Colombian authorities and ELN rebels will hold their next meeting in April in Venezuela
The Colombian government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) rebel group have agreed to hold the next stage of peace talks in April in Venezuela. This was announced in a joint statement by the parties.
According to a document released after three days of talks in Cuba at the request of the mediators, “We will assess progress and implementation of commitments during the seventh round of dialogue, scheduled for the period from April 8 to 22 in Venezuela.”
Last week, the rebels accused the government of failing to implement agreements and freezing the dialogue process. In response, Colombian authorities said that the ELN was initiating “additional crises” in the negotiation process.
The ELN, with several thousand members, remains the largest rebel group in Colombia after the government reached a peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia in 2016. This document marked the end of a long bloody struggle that claimed the lives of more than 250 thousand people.
In November 2022, the country’s authorities began a dialogue with the ANO. In June 2023, the parties reached an agreement on a bilateral ceasefire from August 3, 2023 to January 29, 2024; On February 6, the agreement was extended for another six months.
