Collins dictionary named “AI” word of the year – Kommersant

The word of 2023, according to the Collins English Dictionary, is the abbreviation AI (artificial intelligence, AI), meaning “simulation of human mental functions using computer programs.” Explaining their choice, Collins experts point out that the use of the acronym AI has quadrupled over the year and “has become the dominant term in conversations in 2023.”

Collins Dictionary annually selects words that reflect “our ever-evolving language and the views of those who use it.” This time, among other candidates for the word of the year, from which experts chose the winner, there were also the words:

greedflation (a combination of the words greed and inflation, meaning “using inflation as an excuse to raise prices to unreasonably high levels in order to increase corporate profits”)

debanking (deprivation of the opportunity to use banking services);

Nepo baby (nepotism (nepotism) and baby, that is, a child whose career is built due to the fame of his parents);

Ulez (ultra low emissions zone, an ultra-low emissions zone operating throughout London, for which vehicle owners must pay a fee to enter);

Canon event (an event that is important for the formation of a person’s personality);

Semaglutide (an appetite suppressant);

Bazball (aggressive style of play in test cricket matches);

Deinfluencing (using social networks to warn people to avoid certain services, goods, lifestyle, etc.).

In 2022, the word of the year was permacrisis (permacrisis, permanent crisis), in 2021 – NFT (non-fungible token, non-fungible token), and in 2020 – “lockdown”.
