Climatologist Alexei Kokorin said that global temperatures could reach record highs in 2025 or 2026. According to the previously published forecast of the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO), greenhouse gases, as well as a change in the phases of ocean currents from La Niña to El Niño, will contribute to the growth of global temperatures.
According to Kokorin, either 2025 or 2026 could become the hottest in history. He clarified that it all depends on how long El Niño lasts, since it is impossible to say for sure whether it will last a year or three years. The climatologist added that if a powerful volcanic eruption occurs on the planet, then record temperatures may not be achieved due to the fact that ash entering the stratosphere causes an anti-greenhouse effect and global cooling.
It is noted that the peculiarity of the change in the phases of ocean currents is that during La Niña, heat from the atmosphere intensively goes into the ocean, and during El Niño, in turn, the flow goes from the ocean to the atmosphere. Kokorin warned that the process of changing phases would begin in the second half of this year.
