The World Health Organization Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean reported that Lebanon had 381 cases of cholera infection since the beginning of October, with 17 people already dying from it.
“Since the first case was confirmed on October 5, 2022, more than 1,400 suspected cases have been reported across the country, including 381 laboratory-confirmed cases and 17 deaths,” the WHO regional office said.
As the organization notes, the situation in Lebanon is aggravated by the unfavorable economic situation, as well as insufficient access to clean water and sanitation.
According to WHO, Lebanon was not the first country this year where cholera was detected. Twenty-seven countries have announced outbreaks since the beginning of this year.
