A research team in northwest China said it had developed a way to use high-energy laser beams to keep a drone flying for ultra-long periods of time.
As informs South China Morning Post, Professor Li Xuelong and his colleagues from Northwestern Polytechnic University proposed to equip the drone with a module that can convert light energy into electricity. In this case, the laser beam will be able to remotely power the drone’s electric motor.
The research team is yet to reveal details about the system’s range and photovoltaic conversion efficiency, as the development has the potential for military applications. They distributed only an animated illustration, from which it is clear that the drone will be able to fly to the height of a skyscraper. However, the scientists claim they have already done indoor testing, outdoor daytime flight, and outdoor nighttime flight. The drone showed successful performance during all three tests.
Scientists predict that in the future, using this technology, it will be possible to use large drones to create an airbus transport network.
