In China’s Hunan province, a man was fined for leaning back in his seat on a train.
In March 2022, a man leaned back and allegedly damaged the laptop of a university student named Wang. The incident happened on the way to Wuhan.
Wang used his newly bought laptop on a folding table on the back of his seat. The person at the front, named Liu, leaned right back against Wang’s laptop, shattering the screen.
The laptop was repaired, and Wang sued Liu for 4,788.50 yuan ($685) to cover repair costs and a trip to the police station to report the incident.
The Xiangyin County People’s Court in Hunan province ruled that both parties were partially responsible for what happened, with Liu being 70% to blame because he reclined his seat and Wang being 30% to blame because he should have been more careful.
Wang is required to pay Liu — US$478.15 — 70% of the amount Wang sued.
In its decision, the court indicated that notices had been posted on the train reminding people to check with the passenger behind them before reclining their seats.
