Chinese citizen Xu Haoyang left Russia after a court decision found him guilty of LGBT propaganda and forced expulsion from Russia. Mr. Haoyang announced this on his Telegram blog.
Xu Haoyang is from the Chinese province of Sichuan and is a third-year student at Kazan Federal University. With his boyfriend, Russian citizen Gela Gogishvili, he blogs on social networks (TikTok has 380,000 subscribers, and YouTube has 65,000). Basically, the couple talks about their relationship.
On April 5, police detained Xu Haoyang and Gela Gogishvili in Kazan. They drew up a protocol on LGBT propaganda. Mr. Haoyang stayed at the department for the night, while Mr. Gogishvili was released after a few hours.
On April 6, the Vakhitovsky District Court of Kazan found Xu Haoyang guilty under Part 4 of Art. 6.21.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (dissemination of information on non-traditional sexual relations among minors on the Internet). This article appeared in the Code of Administrative Offenses after the adoption in December last year of a law banning LGBT propaganda in the Russian Federation. The administrative offense case was returned to the police.
According to the decision of the district court, on the YouTube channel run by students, there are 19 videos “depicting non-traditional sexual relations” that minors could see. The defense stated that there was no evidence of Xu Haoyang’s guilt and numerous procedural violations, and asked that the administrative case be dropped. However, the court rejected this claim. As a result, the decision on expulsion entered into force.
